It was a gloomy night. The dark cloud was hovering above Riverdale Town. The wind was howling hollowly as if its soul was drawn out. The yews along side the main road was whirling like strange dancers. They looked creepy when their shadows were drawn long and distorted on the floor by the light spilling out from the windows of St. Paul Hospital, which erected above the high hill in Riverdale, overlooking the whole town.
Tim was standing by the window in the second floor of St. Paul Hospital. He was waiting for his daughter who was doing a tough operation at the moment. The red light of the words “OPERATION” shone above the door was glaring and dazzling. He had nothing to do other than waiting. The most feeling that torturing him now was neither the anxiety of his daughter’s life nor the worrying of the success of this operation; he was regret and remorse by his own unwisdom! How come he never realized the severity of Yuki’s illness? He should have known that, he should have seen that…
“Yuki~ are you having a headache? Why are you always massaging your forehead with ointment?”
“I’m ok, dad! You are too nervous! Just a normal headache! Stop nagging at me like an old man, haha…”
“What did you say just now? Look at this!”
“Wahaha~ it’s so itchy! Stop tickles me! Stop it! Hahahaha…”
“Damn!” banging the window with his fist, Tim cursed himself. Some people walked past the corridor looked alarmed and shocked with his sudden growling. For what did Tim blame himself? For not being a responsible father, for not caring enough to his only daughter, for his neglect to Yuki’s health! She was always a sensible and mature girl, even though she was only 12 years old. Since her mother died 1 year ago in an accident, Tim found that Yuki was not childish anymore. She became quiet, independent and deep thinking, but most of the time she was just quiet. For once, Tim was worried about her changes that were due to the death of her mother. But what could he do other than paying double love and care on Yuki? But one thing for sure was that, no matter how much Tim paid his love to Yuki, and no matter how hardworking he tried to heal Yuki’s mental grief, both of them were stricken seriously in the heart because the person they ever loved so much had left them forever!
Sometimes Tim would find excuses to explain his lack of accompanying Yuki when he backed home from work because he, too, was hard to accept the truth. He felt tired to talk about anything with Yuki. Although he never scolded her, silence and neglect were actually more hurting!
Dots of water were now splattering on the window glass. They flowed down and agglomerated together with other dots of water. Looking at the reflection of him on the window as if he was crying, Tim felt that the weather had just visualized his feeling now. The storm had come! The yews outside were bending so low that it seemed to be broken. Leaves and grasses flying with the strong wind made it so chaotic. Tim looked at the rain and thought of the dialogue with Yuki on the day that had the same weather…
“Papa, why is the sky raining?”
“Maybe… it’s crying?”
“Is it? I always have a feeling that raining means mum is crying above! I think she is worrying of us.”
“You think so? But there is always a beautiful rainbow up there after the storm!”
“But the rainbow bends downwards. It makes sky a gloomy face. It never smiles. I don’t want mum worrying of me. I can take care of myself now. I have grown up! I want to prove it to you, mum!”
